Changes since August 8th race:
This will mark the second week with the vacuum slides locked open in our throttlebodies.
The data logs from August 8th showed me a lot and I have made significant adjustments to the fuel curve to richen the low to mid-range RPM at part throttle.
Hot Laps:
The car ran OK. We were a mid pack car at best. The car wants to four wheel drift up the track from mid-corner off. This kills my forward bite and the fast guys are pulling us by one to two car lengths off each corner.
Changes before the Heat:
Reviewed the datalog from Hotlaps and we are closer, but the bottom end power is still lacking. I richen a little more at the lower RPMs.
Track is already drying out and has a decent cushion.
Tightened the car:
Dropped RR air pressure (6psi)
Increased wing angle.
Started with the shock compressions at: RR set to #3 position and LR shock at #2. I also added four clicks of rebound to both rear shocks.
Heat Race: (started 2nd / finished 3nd)
Started on outside pole - engine hesitated on initial start and we went three wide through 1&2. Ended up running third for all 10 laps. Car continued to four wheel drift from mid-corner off.
The engine has a tinny, ringing sound -- sounds really lean, but the data logs show otherwise. I can't put my finger on it, but something is not quite right with the engine. It just isn't making the power it should and that goofy sound has got to be telling me something!
Changes before Feature:
Starting 2nd:
Reviewed the data logs again. They look pretty good, but that ringing sound is bugging the heck out of me. It finally dawns on me -- it sounds like detonation! I review the timing curve and decide to take out another 3 degrees of advance out.
Track is sealed over (slick) and wide with a cushion pushed way wide.
Tightened the car:
Changed right rear tire to a lesser grooved RD12 compound with a lot of siping and a 5psi bleeder. We also moved the RR tire in another inch.
Set RR and LR shocks to #2 compression position to start the race and put two more clicks into the rebound on both rear shocks.
Changed to big sideboard wing and increased top wing angle by another notch.
Installed a 2C/1R easy up shock on the right front.
Feature: (started 2nd, finished 1st)
As soon as I put my foot into it on the warm-up lap, I knew we had a fast car! On the start we beat the pole sitter into turn one and pulled away from there. The engine was finally making horsepower and the sound was that sweet powerful 600cc sound (no more ringing!!!). The car was hooked up all over the track, but especially right in the middle of the black slick! Green to Checkered in 7 minutes without any cautions! Man, I have been waiting for THIS car to show up!
Wrap-up:
That is what we had in mind when we built this car! The handling was spot on and the engine was pretty good. The engine still has some fuel mapping issues, but they are MINOR compared to previous weeks. We will continue to review the data and make changes - the engine will continue to improve. Taking out that additional 3 degrees of advance (ignition timing) finally awoke the Honda Horsepower Gods. We have one month of racing left in 2009 -- I really want to back this win up with some solid runs and maybe another win or two!
