Changes since August 1st race: 

I like to experiment - sometimes we hit on something awesome and sometimes we fail miserably. Well, this year we failed miserably on our fuel system! We tried to use a set of 2005 Yamaha R6 throttlebodies on our 2008 Honda engine. This required a lot of customization to adapt them to the engine. The reason we tried this was we wanted to utilize the vacuum slide system that Yamaha perfected on these throttlebodies. I look at the vacuum slide system as legal traction control and firmly believe they are why the Yamaha R6 carburetor is the BEST non-fuel injection system ever used on a 600cc micro sprint.

We tried to use the vacuum slide setup with top feed injectors -- I was skeptical from the beginning, but they looked good on the dyno. Well folks, Dynos do lie and we struggled mightily this year trying to get this combination to work. It just won't work as the slides pool fuel upon rapid deceleration (causing the engine to run lean on deceleration) and dump the excess fuel (fouling plugs) upon rapid throttle application. We tried --- we failed.

So for this week, I locked the slides in the open position. I know this will cause the fuel mapping to be off, but we'll see how it goes.  

I also replaced the old fuel injector connectors to eliminate last weeks injector #1 issues.

Hot Laps: 

The car ran real well. We were fast for a change! This is a MAJOR improvement and it looks like we have something to work with now.

  

Changes before the Heat:

Reviewed the datalog from Hotlaps and man what a difference -- the lean spikes during deceleration have been greatly reduced in severity!! The log shows lean all through the map. I richen the entire map by 5%.

Track is already drying out and has a decent cushion.

Tightened the car by dropping RR air pressure (6psi) and increased wing angle.
Started with the RR shock set to #2 position.   

Heat Race: (started 2nd / finished 2nd) 

Started on outside pole - engine hesitated on initial start, but still pulled a car length on the pole sitter into turn one. I decided to go to the cushion. The car ran pretty well, but we are a little low geared for the cushion and I'm all over the rev limiter. We led the first four laps, then Danny Billings showed a nose on the inside. Danny and I raced side-by-side for four laps until he finally cleared me. Hey, I'll take it! The thing ran all ten laps without any burps!

    

Changes before Feature: 

Starting 2nd:

Reviewed the data logs again. WAY lean on bottom end and a little lean on top end. Richened up in both areas. I really don't have a lot of faith that the current fuel map is going to work real well for this race. We haven't run any laps at part throttle yet and I am betting that the map will be way off without the slides operating -- We'll soon find out.

Track is sealed over (slick) and wide with a cushion pushed way wide.

Tightened the car:
Changed to a 12" wide right rear wheel (more sidebite) with 5psi and moved the wheel in 3/4".
Set RR shock to #2 position to start the race.
Changed to big sideboard wing and increased top wing angle by another notch.

  

Feature: (started 2nd, finished 6th) 

Car hesitates on the start again and polesitter and I go side-by-side into turn one. The car sticks throught the middle and I get the lead down the backstraight -- CAUTION for a spin. Second start and polesitter gets the jump. I fall into second and we pull away from 3rd. I have nothing for the leader (Danny Billings) as the car is four wheel drifting up the track from middle-corner off. Also, the engine feels real lean at part throttle (just as I thought it would). We were holding our own for 18 laps, then the caution flew. I knew I was in trouble now and sure enough the lean condition (lack of acceleration) killed me on the restart. Well, that and the idiot lapped car that kept chopping my nose! We just didn't have the off corner handle or power to handle these guys and I fell back a few spots over the last five laps. A little frustrating, but TONS better than the last month!

Wrap-up: 

We are now bringing a gun to the gun-fight! We found out a lot about the fuel mapping and gained consistency; thus, we can seriously improve the engine performance using data logs. We also found out that this car doesn't want as much stagger as our old car. We will be much better next week!
